Jondaryan grower Cameron Kuhnemann counts on A66 grain sorghum for consistent yields.

Mixed cropping farmer Cameron Kuhnemann of Jondaryan QLD has been a steadfast grower and champion for A66 grain sorghum for four years in a row.

Over the years, Cameron has experienced firsthand the reliability of A66 sorghum, which has become the 'go-to' hybrid for grain sorghum farmers who seek ease of harvest and a safe package of traits.

The mixed cropping farmer, who also grows corn, mung beans and wheat in rotation with his pillar crop, grain sorghum, sought a recommendation from Pioneer Seeds® Territory Sales Manager for the Central & Southern Downs, Goondiwindi & Border Rivers, Ben Thrift, who has been working with Cameron for 12 years.

"I initially recommended A66 grain sorghum seeds to Cameron because I know it's a reliable hybrid and it would work for what he wanted. He wanted a hybrid with high stress tolerance that delivered yield security,” Ben said.

Cameron was so impressed with the outcome that he has grown it every season since.

"We were looking at a mix of hybrids at the time, but we stuck with this one once we'd grown it for the first time. It's got great standability - it always seems to be the hybrid we come to latest in the season but it's reliable standability means it can wait until we get to it, even in wet years when harvest has been delayed.

"Along with the standability, it's got a consistent yield. We can rely on it to have a decent harvest every year. We look after our sorghum crop - we follow a pretty similar herbicide and pesticide regime with it each year, but it's high midge rating does help give us some certainty," he said.

Ben said A66 was a good choice as it stands out for its high plant vigour, ensuring reliable plant establishment and root growth, as well as its good standability, meaning more grain is presented to the header for harvest, making it a preferred choice for farmers like Cameron who value performance and yield consistency.

"Now that Cameron has been growing it for about four seasons, you can tell he trusts it. He knows what he's going to get out of it, it's got a great trait package, and it sets up to his expectations. With its high yield potential, solid midge resistance and standability, it's just a very reliable hybrid," he said.

The medium-quick maturity hybrid has been a solid performer for growers in the Southern and Western Downs and Goondiwindi region since its commercial emergence, with growers from Boggabilla NSW to Moonie QLD to Warra QLD and beyond all reaping the benefits of planting the steadfast hybrid.

Cameron intends to continue to grow the hybrid into the future, praising its reliability.

"I'll definitely be growing it this season. I think the most important thing to note that we love about it is its consistency and standability, year after year," he said.
